Research Scientist




At Gentherm, we are expanding our human research testing capabilities and are looking for a Research Scientist with expertise in human thermoregulation, neurophysiology, sensory neurophysiology, ergonomics, or kinesiology/exercise science. The Research Scientist will join the newly developed thermal physiology team; a team that sits at the forefront of the company’s mission in developing thermal solutions that improve health, wellness and comfort. The successful candidate will play an integral role in researching and developing our cutting-edge technology to deliver optimal thermal solutions, with the human at the center of all our products. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading, designing and executing physiological and subjective evaluations of our personal thermal comfort systems and components through laboratory and field-based testing. The position will collaborate with other advanced engineering teams to drive innovation through scientific understanding and empirical research in the development of personalized, human-centric thermal solutions.

This is a research-oriented opportunity for a well-organized, curious, and motivated individual that appreciates attention to detail and functions well in diverse, cross-disciplinary environments.



  • Design empirical research studies to address key research questions
  • Administer laboratory and field-based studies, utilizing our state-of-the-art environmental chambers, vehicles, and sensory equipment to evaluate physiological and perceptual responses to our in-vehicle thermal comfort solutions
  • Collect, analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative data:
    • Physiological data, including (but not limited to) core and skin temperature, sweat rate, skin blood flow, cardiovascular responses, EEG and anthropometric characteristics
    • Subjective data (such as thermal sensation, comfort, pain, fatigue and wetness) and other variables related to the user experience
  • Coordinate multiple research projects in a timely and efficient manner, while ensuring that 1) all milestones and deliverables are met in a timely fashion; and 2) all deliverables are of the highest scientific integrity.
  • Communicate knowledge and insights in high-profile situations to diverse audiences
  • Write research reports, generate presentations, present results from the laboratory tests.
  • Support and develop our junior scientists (R&D Engineers) to reach their full potential.
  • Ensures compliance with data protection policies (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Participates in miscellaneous research efforts within the Gentherm R&D team.




  • PhD in Thermophysiology, Physiology, Neurophysiology, Ergonomics or other closely related human science subject.
  • OR a Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Physiology, Thermophysiology, biomedical engineering, ergonomics, other closely related human science subject, plus: 3-5 years’ experience working in a research environment or an applied setting monitoring/collecting data from humans
  • Proficient in MS Office suite.
  • Proven knowledge of statistics.
  • Strong communication skills.

  • Python scripting skills.
  • Knowledge of LabView and/or other instrument/computer interfacing software is highly desired.
  • Translating scientific findings into tangible products
